Certification Authority Certificates

Certificates can be divided into two families:
  • Those which are signed by a certificate (root) implemented on web browsers (aka unchained certificates)
  • Those which are signed by a certificate (not implemented on web browsers). The latter is signed by a certificate implemented on web browsers (aka chained certificates).
Chained certificate can be easily managed by Certification Authorities and enhance the global security level.

Technically speaking, there is no difference between chained or unchained certificates, provided that the chained certificate -and its entire certification chain- are properly installed. That is the reason why unchained certificates are easier to install than chained ones that require the installation of several certificates.
